| What are keywords? |
|
Basically 'keyword' is a search term that your prospective visitor types into a search engine query box. It can be a phrase or sometimes even a sentence. For instance, if I want to search for free copy writing services, then I would type a keyword like "free copywriting service" or "free copy writing service" into the search engine. Optimizing for a Keyword Optimizing for a keyword would mean making sure that your website appears in the top ten results page of a particular search engine (serp) or many search engines when someone makes a search using that keyword. For instance; if you type the keyword 'what are keywords' in google, then you would find this page in the top ten/twenty results. This means that this page is optimized for the keyword 'what is keyword' for the google search engine. Finding out keywords that people use It is better to find out for yourself the keywords people make use of while searching, rather than doing a guess work. There are free as well a paid services available online which will help you figure out just this. But data based on free services are not updated regularly and hence you may not get the latest keywords. Again free services may show you keywords only from a particular search engine. One more drawback of using a free service to find keywords is the fact that your competitor would have done the same. Now chances are that both of you (or as many competitors that you have) would be optimizing for the same keyword and hence the changes of your page reaching the top position minimizes. The solution here is to make use of paid services. The one and only professional service offered is by wordtracker. This site offers a list of comprehensive keywords that are updated every sixty days from all major search engines. You can get lots of unique keywords using this service and can easily optimize for them and reach the top position. Which means, whenever someone makes use of these keywords your page will appear on top of the search results. Which keywords to optimize for? You might get thousands of keywords based on the popularity of your product/service. The best thing to do in this case is to optimize for three phrase to four phrase keywords. In case your product/service is not so popular then you can optimize for two or even one phrase keywords. Anyway as a practise make it a point to test the keyword in a popular search engine to find out how many pages are being listed for it. The number of pages are generally highlighted on the top right hand corner. If the pages are less than 1000 then the keyword can be easily optimized, whereas it the pages are above 1,00,000 you will have to do some work to make sure you get to the top. Generally as the number of key phrases increase the pages listed will decrease. |
